Germany demands revision of steel quotas

Before a meeting with his American counterpart Scott Bessent, German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil called the quota system for European steel imports to the United States one of the issues he intends to raise. This is reported by Bloomberg.

Klingbeil added that this will be important for the German steel industry and for many jobs in Germany.

Scott Bessent and Lars Klingbeil met on August 4 in the USA. As stated in the official statement of the US Treasury, it, in particular, discussed the "historic trade agreement" of the parties.

The agreement between the United States and Europe, concluded in July, provides for duties on most imported goods from the bloc at 15%. Brussels has received partial exemption from certain industry tariffs, for example, for cars, but not for steel and aluminum – negotiations related to quotas are continuing on this issue.

Recall, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the European Union will negotiate with the United States on steel, focusing on quotas within which it is possible to export without too high tariffs. He also noted that the government will do everything to preserve the German metallurgical sector and steel production in the country.
