Coronado shuts down Australian coal mine due to roof collapse

The American-Australian coal mining company Coronado has suspended underground mining at its Curragh complex, which produces mainly coking coal, in Queensland due to a fatal roof collapse on January 2.

Queensland's Occupational Safety and Health Regulatory Authority (RSHQ) has issued several directives for the mine to reduce the potential risk to workers, RSHQ chief executive Rob Djukic told the Argus on January 5. Djukic added that RSHQ investigators are also currently working at the site.

Coronado's open-pit mines in Kurraga are operating normally, the company told investors.

Coronado has faced security issues before. The company has suspended operations at its Lower War Eagle coal mine in West Virginia due to a fatal incident that occurred on December 18, 2025. But it has since reopened the mine, a Coronado spokesman told Argus.

The West Virginia Office of Health, Safety, and Training of Miners is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident, Governor Patrick Morrisey said.

Recent security issues at Coronado are accompanied by existing financial difficulties. On November 27, 2025, Stanwell, the Australian state-owned electricity production company, completed the development of a long-term support package for the coal producer. The deal includes a number of prepayment terms, credit lines, and flexibility regarding existing coal supply contracts, Coronado announced on October 28, 2025.

Earlier, Stanwell agreed to support the Coronado complex in the Curragh by concluding a $150 million coal prepayment deal on October 10. June 2025

. However, Coronado's financial problems did not have a significant impact on production at the Curragh in 2025. At the end of June 2025, the company commissioned a continuous mining unit at the underground mine of the complex and increased production at this site in July-September. During the quarter, 3.1 million tons of coal were mined at Curragh, which is 35% more than a year earlier.
