John Carruthers—Green, a steel market analyst and member of the European Parliament, will explain how the EU's emissions policy has led to higher steel prices in a new webinar on CBAM.
Carruthers—Green, a regular contributor to the MEPs' monthly podcast "Talking about Steel," will be a guest expert to join the IACBAM webinar series when it appears in the issue scheduled for 1 p.m. GMT January 29.
"CBAM is the first policy of its kind to directly link carbon prices to imports, so some uncertainty is inevitable," Carruthers—Green said. "This is a real political experiment, and many companies are still working on what this means in practice.
" Our goal in this webinar is to overcome this uncertainty and provide clear practical recommendations not only on how CBAM works in theory, but also on how it works in practice. about how this already affects the cost of imports and pricing decisions in the European steel market."
Each month, IACBAM's CBAM Compliance Specialist gathers leading experts to share a unique, in-depth look at CBAM-related issues through a series of webinars. It aims to provide insight and advice on various topics ranging from customs and pricing policy to sustainable development and the macroeconomic trends resulting from CBAM's implementation.
In this month's webinar, CBAM law moves from price policy, Carruthers-Green will explore how EU steel importers pre-CBAM tax calculations affect steel prices and what this means for the competitiveness of key supplier countries.
The session will also address ongoing uncertainties, including the cost of exposure, the use of validated emission data to reduce costs, and recent proposals that could increase the flexibility of the CBAM administration.

"CBAM is no longer just a matter of compliance, it's commercial and strategic," Carruthers said Green. "This introduces real costs that steel buyers and suppliers must consider when setting prices, choosing suppliers, and being competitive.
"Understanding how emissions data, ETS exposure, and supplier selection interact will be crucial for companies seeking to remain competitive as the scheme continues to evolve."
The MEPs' collaboration with IACBAM followed the January release of the podcast "Talking about Steel" dedicated to CBAM. In the episode "Calculating the cost of carbon", the head of the Department of price analysis and forecasts of MEPs, Kay Ayub, discussed the latest developments,
