The outlook for bulk carriers transporting iron ore from mines to smelters has been weakened by the accident at the Vale Brumadinho dam in Brazil, Norwegian shipping company Golden Ocean said on Tuesday, presenting its quarterly profit forecast.

Dry cargo market prospects deteriorate after Brazil dam disaster

A dam in the city of Brumadinho, where the tailings dumps containing mud-like waste from iron ore mining were located, collapsed on January 25, killing at least 166 people and almost 200 others missing.

" The beginning of 2019 looked promising with good volumes of iron ore exported from both Brazil and Australia, but the tragic accident at the Brumadinho Dam in Brazil quickly changed the mood and outlook for 2019 volumes " - said in a statement from Oslo-based Golden Ocean, which supplies iron ore and other dry cargoes worldwide.

The final impact on maritime traffic remains to be seen, but it is likely that the expected increase in Brazilian exports in 2019 will result in a decline ,” the statement said.

Freight carrier Golden Ocean, controlled by Norwegian-born tycoon John Fredriksen, posted adjusted EBITDA earnings of $ 70.4 million for the quarter, beating the Reuters average forecast of $ 53.2 million.

The company offered a quarterly dividend of $ 0.05 per share, below the expected $ 0.13.
