The US Department of Commerce announced a new anti-dumping investigation against imports of rebar from Mexico.
US law provides that the Department may conduct an investigation when there is evidence that goods that are exempted from duty are undergoing minor changes, resulting in a product falling outside the scope of the heading.
In 2018, imports of rebar from Mexico to the United States were estimated at $ 51 million.
The investigation was initiated in response to inquiries from valve manufacturers in the United States: Nucor Corporation, Gerdau Ameristeel US Inc., Steel Dynamics, Inc. And a number of smaller businesses.
As a result of the investigation, the US Department of Commerce may impose anti-dumping duties that will apply to all shipments of valves from Meschica, starting from the date of the investigation, i.e. from October 22, 2019.
“Strict adherence to US trade laws is a major challenge for the Trump administration. Since the inception of the current administration, the Department of Commerce has initiated 26 new investigations into tariff circumvention, an increase of 189 percent over the number of circumvention initiations made during a comparable period in the previous administration. >
This is the second investigation in the past five years that the Department of Commerce has examined Mexican companies for possible dumping of valves in the US market.
