New generation high-strength pipes successfully tested in Russia

The United Metallurgical Company (OMK) was the first in Russia to confirm the ability to produce high-strength pipes of various sizes for the construction of gas pipelines with ultra-high working pressure of 150 atmospheres.

strength K70 with a wall thickness of 31.6 mm. This is already the second standard size of OMK pipes made of steel of strength class K70, which has successfully passed field tests and is designed for gas pipelines with an operating pressure 30-50% higher than that of existing gas transmission systems. In March, the company received a positive opinion on pipes with a wall of 26.3 mm.

The new pipe is designed for difficult sections of the gas pipeline, including crossings under roads and underwater crossings. Previously, such products were not produced in Russia.

..Finished pipes were tested for resistance to extended destruction, in which the rupture of one pipe disables a large section of the gas pipeline. To do this, they were welded into a whip about 200 meters long and pumped up with compressed air, raising the pressure level in the “cylinder” above the working one. Then initiated the rupture of the central section of the pipeline. The test result is determined by the nature of the destruction of the experimental lash, as well as after a thorough study of instrument readings and examination of metal samples by specialists from specialized institutes,” the press service of the metallurgical company reports.

“This is the second size of OMK pipes made of class steel strength K70, which has successfully passed field tests. In March, we received a positive opinion on pipes with a wall of 26.3 mm. Both tests confirmed that the new products, which we developed with the customer in mind, are resistant to extended fracture. Due to its high strength, it is designed for difficult operating conditions and will make it possible to reduce capital expenditures for pipeline construction in the future,” said Pavel Stepanov, director of the OMK Engineering and Technology Center.
