According to the commitments, the company will reduce air emissions by more than 30 thousand tons by 2024

PAO Severstal (one of the world's leading vertically integrated steel and mining companies) presented the progress of implementation of the national project "Ecology" to representatives of the environmental rating agency "Interfax-ERA" and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF Russia).

During their visit to the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (CherMK), the guests got acquainted with the progress of the activities planned by Severstal »Within the framework of a program to reduce air emissions. The measures were developed in the framework of the implementation of the May Decree of the President of the Russian Federation on reducing gross emissions in large industrial centers and were included in the national project “Ecology”.

Severstal is systematically reducing the impact on the environment in Cherepovets. During the period from 2004 to 2018, an investment program was implemented aimed at reducing emissions of pollutants into the air, gross emissions into the air of CherMK during this time were reduced by 45,000 tons. Expenses for the implementation of air protection measures in the period from 2004 to 2018 amounted to more than 11 billion rubles. And the work towards nature conservation continues. Not so long ago, Severstal entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, Rosprirodnadzor and the Vologda Oblast on cooperation within the framework of the federal project "Clean Air". The company, according to the document, undertakes to implement by 2024 a list of investment projects with an expected reduction in atmospheric emissions of more than 30,000 tons.

Results of the above work Alexander Martynov, director of the environmental and energy rating agency "Interfax-ERA " and Alexei Knizhnikov, Program Manager, Environmental Business Responsibility, World Wildlife Fund, considered significant. They called the cooperation of the metallurgical company with the Darwin State Biosphere Reserve, with which Severstal entered into a long-term cooperation this year. Within the framework of the cooperation agreement, work has begun on the study and conservation of birds in the Red Data Book. There are such companies on the territory of CherMK and in the zone of possible influence of the enterprise. The list of works includes determination of the species composition, number, biotopic distribution and phenology of birds.

During the round tables, the role of transparency of companies in the new model of the economy, methods of forming ratings, including environmental ones, and their impact on the development of companies were discussed. The roundtable participants unanimously spoke about the importance of openness and transparency of companies and their positive impact on the quality of company management.

Such reporting is intended to show interested parties, for example, the population living near metallurgical plants, investors or insurance companies, the level of current environmental impacts and environmental risks from the activities of a particular company.

According to the compilers of the rating, it makes a significant contribution to the reliability of such non-financial statements of companies. Development of non-financial reporting is in line with the Government's order.
