The Pipe Metallurgical Company (TMK) has received a patent for the invention "Carbon fiber farm and a method of its formation at a waste disposal facility", developed at the Volzhsky Pipe Plant (VTZ, a branch of the company). The document secures TMK's exclusive rights to the technology, protects it from copying, and allows it to sell licenses or implement the solution on its other sites.
The essence of the invention is to create specialized green areas on reclaimed industrial waste landfills. Fast-growing poplar cuttings are planted on a fertile soil layer on top of an inert material that covers sealed capsules with neutralized waste.
Such an ecosystem ensures efficient carbon dioxide absorption and soil purification in the arid steppe climate of the Volgograd region. The authors of the development were a team of VTZ specialists together with scientists from the Bauman Moscow State Technical University (Bauman Moscow State Technical University).
"The uniqueness of the invention lies in the location of the carbon farm itself — an industrial waste landfill — and a special technology that includes a certain planting density, seedling varieties and a pruning cycle. This is a complex where location and method work as a single whole. Its patent protection will become a legal guarantee for scaling the solution as one of the key elements of TMK's strategy to combat climate change," said Marianna Klimova, Head of the Ecology and Climate Service and Chief Ecologist at TMK.
The creation of a carbon farm at the VTZ is the company's contribution to achieving national goals for reducing emissions and transitioning to a low—carbon economy. The proven climate efficiency of the ecosystem allowed TMK to register the first carbon unit in the register of carbon units. Earlier, the project for the construction and similar remediation of the Pervouralsky Novotrubny Plant industrial waste landfill (PNTZ, TMK branch) won the National Award in the field of environmental technologies "ECOTECH LEADER 2026".
