In 2020, Yekaterinburg will host the European SAMBO Championships. This decision was made by the Congress of the European Sambo Federation (ESF), which took place yesterday in Spanish Gijon, where the next European Championship starts today.
According to the President of the European and All-Russian Sambo Federations Sergei Eliseev, it was the Ural capital that presented the strongest and most prepared application, which made it possible to bypass other competitors. In addition, he noted the special support given to the promotion of the candidacy of Yekaterinburg by the city and regional authorities, as well as the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company, whose eponymous UMMC Sambo Club is currently one of the strongest in Russia and the world.
- I hope it will be one of the best championships. We decided to show Russia at the junction of Europe and Asia. Plus, in Yekaterinburg, one of the strongest federations. We want to demonstrate the attitude in our country to this sport, - quotes Eliseeva as quoted by RIA Novosti.
- The SAMBO Federation of the Sverdlovsk region already has considerable experience in organizing Russian championships and championships in Yekaterinburg and neighboring Verkhnyaya Pyshma, as well as the largest departmental competitions. UEFA EURO 2020 should set an even higher organizational bar and ensure a genuine spectator interest in the tournament. All this will work to further strengthen the image of SAMBO on the European and world arenas, - says the President of the Regional SAMBO Federation Viktor Asikhin.
As for the current European Championship in Spain, the Sverdlovsk Region will be represented by two athletes - championship finalists Russia 2019. These are teammates from the UMMC Verkhnepyshminsky CS Evgeny Eremin (up to 52 kg) and Vladimir Gladkikh (up to 57 kg).
