How to check the quality of tank welds

The reliability and safety of tanks primarily depends on the quality of welded joints. Even microscopic flaws in the seams can cause a violation of the integrity of containers, leakage of their contents, and lead to a man-made disaster. Regular monitoring of welded joints will help ensure the safety of the environment and people servicing the system reservoirs. Objects must be subject to inspection for the integrity of seams upon commissioning, throughout their entire service life - routinely and during repairs.

Non-destructive diagnostic methods

Possibilities of modern equipment allow for inspection of seams without destroying the object. During such a test, the system continues to operate in normal mode, since it is not required to stop.

When carrying out research, flaw detectors most often resort to:

  • visual measuring technologies. During the inspection, specialists visually inspect the seams and carefully study their condition using lighting devices, magnifying glasses, and mirrors. This technique helps to determine the presence of voids, delaminations, cracks, and non-compliance of the dimensions of the weld with the established standards. VIC is always used at the first stage of testing, most often in combination with other test options;
  • ultrasound diagnostics. This method allows you to detect internal defects in the form of cracks and voids. Ultrasonic waves are applied to the seam, and their reflection is recorded. By analyzing reflected waves, specialists determine the presence and size of defects. This is a high-precision method that is equally effective when studying both fresh joints and those already in use;
  • magnetic particle examination. The method is relevant for identifying damage to the seam both on its surface and under it . During testing, the area under study is magnetized, after which a ferromagnetic composition in the form of a powder or suspension is applied to it. As a result, an indicator pattern is formed on the surface that accurately conveys the outline of the defect;
  • X-ray. The test is carried out using X-rays penetrating into the area being studied. The resulting image is recorded using a receiver and analyzed. Studying images allows you to detect existing flaws and guarantees a high level of detail.
