More than 70% of more than 1,800 leading enterprises in east China's Shanghai city have resumed work and production amid a new wave of the coronavirus infection, a press conference on the work on the prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic in Shanghai said on Thursday .

Industrial enterprises in Shanghai have made steady progress in resuming production. Thus, the resumption rate among the first batch of more than 660 leading enterprises exceeded 90%.

Key industries in the city, such as automotive, integrated circuit manufacturing, biological medicine and pharmaceuticals, continue to recover and increase production capacity, while leading enterprises maintain stable production.

Quarantine began when there were 50 cases in the city. The lockdown in Shanghai shocked global markets, worried about the possible economic consequences. China's manufacturing activity fell to a five-month low in March, according to a study released Thursday.

China remains one of the few countries with a zero tolerance policy for COVID-19. This means limiting the spread of the virus through lockdowns and mandatory quarantine for those who have come into contact with infected citizens.
