Japan's third-largest steel producer in the world by the end of 2019. The sharp rise in exports and imports evidence of serious problems with internal steel consumption in the country.

the Japanese Federation of iron and steel recorded a new record steel exports in March 2020 (based on the total tonnage of steel), which is made up 3.49 million tons, a 26.0% more than in the same month a year earlier.

the Volume of exports of ordinary steel products totaled 2,333 million tons, an increase of 25.9% compared to the same month last year, for the third month in a row.

By main products exports of hot-rolled wide steel (1 167 000 tonnes, an increase of 54.6 per cent) grew for 12 consecutive months, the supply of heavy plates (283 000 tonnes, an increase of 25.6%) rose for the first time in five months, sheets of galvanized steel (228 000 tons (an increase of 11.3% annualized) for the third consecutive month, while overseas sales of cold-rolled wide steel (198 000 tons, up 2.7% yoy) rose for the third month in a row.

the Largest consumer of Japanese steel remains South Korea (551 000 tonnes, a rise of 11.5 per cent), Thailand (448 000 tons, increase 11.2%) and China (416 000 tonnes).

steel Imports to Japan on the contrary is sharply reduced in March 2020 the volume of imports of ordinary steel products amounted to 377 000 tonnes, which is 8.4% less than in the same month last year, and decreases for 3 consecutive months.
