Sales of electric cars in the world could fall by 43% to reach 1.3 million units by the end of 2020, according to a new study by Wood Mackenzie.

In 2019, the sales volume of electric vehicles closer to 2.2 million units.

One of the factors that will lead to a drop in sales this year, has become a pandemic coronavirus. Also, it affects the potential postponement of the upgrade of fleets in response to falling oil prices and a wait and see approach consumers to purchase new cars.

Analysts Wood Mackenzie have noted that the pace of demand in China will recover to the levels of 2019 to November 2020, while in Europe it will happen by December. Annual demand in the U.S. is expected to lag behind the figure for 2019 30% by the end of this year.

"At the end of January sales of all cars in China fell by 21% compared to the year 2019. By February, they fell by 80%. Sales of electric cars have suffered more substantial, in January the index fell by 54%, and in February, as expected, collapsed by 90%. The share of electric vehicles accounted for about 5% of sales of all cars in China for the last two years", – noted in the study.

"At the same time, sales of electric cars in Europe jumped by 121% in January, despite a reduction in the overall market by 7%. The upward trend also continued in February, but the pace was slower than the previous month", – analysts write.

the figures for January and February do not reflect the implications of the coronavirus for the two regions.
