The European Parliament approved tougher emissions standards for some vehicles as part of a deal that weakened the EU's original proposal after objections from some member states.
The new rules maintain the status quo on limits on pollutants, including oxides nitrogen and carbon monoxide for cars and vans, but set tougher limits for buses and trucks.
They also set limits for the first time on particulate pollution from the brakes of cars and vans.
The new rules, still requiring final official approval by EU countries, will apply to cars and vans from July 2030, and to buses and trucks 12 months later.
Alexander Vondra, the European Parliament's lead legislator on the rules, explained that the final policy "strikes a balance between environmental goals and the vital interests of producers."
