Rising raw material costs and reduced availability lead to higher domestic prices for long products in Poland

Prices for rebar and wire rod in Poland in the domestic market continued to rise during the week until Friday, January 23, amid rising prices for raw materials caused by a reduction in supply.

Market participants cited rising prices for scrap metal and electricity as the main reason for the increased supply of enterprises, which is a trend typical of many European markets.

Harsher than usual winter weather conditions are also slowing down scrap collection across the region.

"Earlier this month, we sold several[scrap]shipments, but we can't deliver them," one trader said, referring to the weather conditions.

Ukraine has also imposed a total ban on the export of scrap metal from the country for 2026, while in 2025, according to the trader, the country supplied about 300,000 tons.

In addition, the introduction of the Carbon Boundary Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) from January 1, 2026, has caused uncertainty in the import sector, leading to delays in orders for imported billets and competing imported long products.

Under such conditions, Polish factories have increased their supply for both rebar and wire rod.

Prices for fittings ranged from 2550 zlotys ($716) to 2700 zlotys per ton without VAT, while acceptable levels were estimated at 2550-2600 zlotys per ton without VAT.

Fastmarkets' weekly price estimate for steel rebar, domestic, cpt, Poland, on Friday was 2550-2600 zlotys per ton, compared with 2480-2550 zlotys per ton a week earlier.

The supply of wire rod ranged from 2600-2700 zlotys per ton, while reasonable prices were allegedly in the range of 2600-2650 zlotys per ton.

Fastmarkets' weekly estimate of prices for domestic steel rod (drawing quality) supplied to Poland was 2600-2650 zlotys per ton, stable from week to week.

While prices were rising due to higher raw material costs, demand was reported to be subdued due to reduced activity on construction sites, as well as sufficient inventory from customers.

During the reporting week, offers were received for Italian fittings at a price of 605-610 euros (715-721 dollars) per ton of CPT.

A wire rod of the same origin was offered at a price of 630-640 euros per ton of CPT.
