Sulzle Stahlpartner has started supplying about 2,500 tons of stainless steel fittings for the West Pier at the Heligoland Port in the North Sea.
The western pier protects the port in the south of the island and, in fact, serves as an essential element of security for this rocky island in the German Bay. According to Sulzle, in order for the 563-meter protective structure to continue to withstand the enormous loads of the North Sea, large-scale repairs and technical modernization will be carried out on it until 2028.
A key element of the project was the high-strength stainless steel reinforcement Top12 manufactured by Steeltec AG. It uses steel grade 1.4003 with a chromium content of more than 12%, designed for use in conditions of increased exposure to chlorides. In areas where the structure is constantly exposed to splashes and tides, this material provides significantly higher strength compared to conventional reinforcing steel.
Supplies will be carried out from the Sulzle stainless steel plant in Bad Zeckingen in southern Germany. The company also announced that it plans to produce stainless steel fittings at its plant in Salz, Lower Saxony.
