The metallurgical company Tata Steel Nederland (TSN) is exploring the possibility of closing the KGF 1 and KGF 2 coke and gas plants faster than previously expected. This will be discussed in the press release.
TSN notes that the accelerated closure of such facilities is a technically and logistically difficult process. Special attention should be paid to responsible environmental aspects and safety during decommissioning.
At the same time, the company received a letter from the Environmental Protection Service of the North Sea Canal region (Omgevingsdienst Noordzeekanaalgebied, ODNZKG). In it, the regulator announced its intention to revoke permits for coke and gas plants. Tata Steel Nederland notes that this letter, as well as uncertainty about the possible timing of such a decision, create additional risks for the entire company.
The situation was also highlighted by the parent company of Tata Steel Limited. In his financial report, he specifically mentioned the uncertainty surrounding the future of coking facilities in the Netherlands.
TSN informed ODNZKG how, in its opinion, the closure of KGF 1 and KGF 2 should take place. The company emphasizes that this process should be safe, responsible and controlled, taking into account the requirements for environmental protection, industrial safety and stability of the enterprise.
Tata Steel Nederland emphasizes that they strive to find a solution acceptable to all stakeholders. At the same time, the company intends to take into account both environmental and safety requirements, as well as business continuity issues.
