the Decline of domestic consumption in Turkey, which began in the second half of 2018 and deepened in the last quarter, continued in 2019. However, thanks to measures taken in the second half of the year, the downward trend in domestic consumption had ceased, announced the Turkish Association of ferrous metallurgy (TCUD).
In the last quarter of 2019, the demand for steel in Turkey has increased compared to the previous quarter and 33.4%, while in November the growth in demand was 41%, and in December of 67%. The total consumption of final products decreased by 15.4% from 30.7 to 26 million tons.
the Decline in steel consumption, which reached 40% in the first half of 2019, began to develop positively thanks to the taken measures of economic stability. "However, the fact that the rapid growth of consumption in the last months of the year was achieved at the expense of imports, not the domestic supply, continued decline in domestic production, and steel production finished the year with a fall of 9,6%", - noted in TCUD.
In Association urged the Turkish government to take urgent measures to protect the domestic market, as in December 2019 increase in imports of steel products reached 101%, while the growth of import of flat products amounted to 114%.
After declining 0.6% in 2018, the steel industry of Turkey closed the year 2019 with a decline of 9.6%, releasing 33.7 million tons of steel due to a sharp decline in domestic consumption and the negative effects of growing protectionism in the international market.
