Ukraine may resume coal exports to Poland. Kyiv is considering the possibility of opening appropriate quotas. Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal announced this after a meeting with his Polish counterpart Matiusz Morawiecki.
“On behalf of the President of Ukraine, at the request of the Polish side, Ukraine is ready to consider the possibility of opening quotas for coal exports to Poland. We are talking about 100 thousand tons in September, which are now critically needed by our Polish partners. Coal reserves in our warehouses are almost 2 million tons, which is 2.5 times more than on this date last year. Therefore, we are ready to lend a shoulder of support to our Polish friends,” Shmyhal said.
Denis Shmyhal also said that they are now actively reconstructing the KhNPP-Rzeszow power transmission line, which will increase electricity exports to Poland by 1000 MW.
“Now we export only 300 MW to the European power grid. We are doing everything possible so that by the end of 2022 the amount of available transmission capacity in the direction of Slovakia, Romania and Hungary will increase by another 200-300 MW, and in the direction of Poland - more than 1000 MW,” Shmyhal said.
Recall that earlier the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine completely banned the export of all coal of Ukrainian origin, setting zero quotas. Restrictions today apply to all Ukrainian coal, including coking coal for metallurgy.
