The enterprises produced 5.1 million rolled products. Total steel production in the Russian Federation during this period, according to the company "Chermet Corporation" decreased by 2% year–on-year to 6 of the same period last year - 17.5 million tons (-0.7%), follows from the data "Chermet". Iron ore production and coke production in January –March decreased by 7% in both cases, to 26.9 million tons and 5.9 million tons, respectively.

In 2024, Russian ferrous metallurgy enterprises produced 70.7 million tons of steel, which is 7% less than in 2023, according to the report of the Chermet Corporation. These data are completely consistent with the statistics of the World Steel Association (WSA). The historical maximum was recorded in 2021, when steel production in Russia, according to the WSA, reached 76 million tons.

According to the baseline scenario of the strategy for the development of the metallurgical industry until 2030 (approved by the government in 2022), steel production in Russia, including four new regions of the Russian Federation, should grow to 90.4 million tons per year in five years. The document also predicts an increase in domestic demand for rolled products to 58 million tons per year. 1 trillion tons of pig iron – by 6% to 4.4 million tons. At the same time, the pipe segment showed symbolic growth – by 0.4% to 1 million tons.

Iron ore production fell by 11% in March to 9.3 million tons, while coke production decreased by 8.5% to 2 million tons, Vedomosti writes.

In the first quarter of 2025, the volume of steel production in the country remained almost at the same level. Chermet does not take into account data on new regions in its statistics.

Steel exports from Russia decreased by 8% last year, according to the Russian Steel Association (which unites the largest Russian ferrous metallurgy enterprises). At the same time, domestic consumption decreased by almost 6%. The largest decrease was recorded in the energy sector. The association does not disclose absolute figures.

Previously, Russian metallurgy was largely focused on foreign markets. In recent years, the industry's export strategy has undergone significant changes due to sanctions restrictions. In 2022, the European Union imposed a ban on the import of a number of metal products from Russia. Similar measures were applied by the United Kingdom, and in March 2023, the United States imposed duties of 70% (actually a barrier level) on supplies of Russian metals. As a result, the main volumes of steel exports are now directed to the countries of the Middle East and Southeast Asia, according to Gazprombank's review.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, historically, about 40-45% of the total steel production in the country was exported. In 2023, this figure dropped to 30-35% amid rising domestic demand and a decrease in imports of certain types of metal products.
