The main source of investment will be the company's own funds. At the same time, the SMZ expects to use state support mechanisms.

A representative of the company told Vedomosti that the complex will produce rolled steel, which in the future will mainly be used for the production of aluminum packaging.

Some of the products will be produced using closed-cycle technology, i.e. from recycled aluminum.

Manufacturers' demand for eco-friendly aluminum packaging is actively growing in Russia, the SMZ representative noted. According to him, the products will be supplied primarily to the Russian market, but supplies to friendly countries are not excluded.

According to the company's plans, the construction of the rolling complex should become a key stage in the implementation of the strategy to increase the plant's production capacity.

SMZ (part of the holding company "Industrial Investments" by entrepreneur Mikhail Shelkov) is the largest producer of aluminum semi-finished products in Russia. Currently, the production capacity of the enterprise for the production of aluminum semi-finished products is 272,000 tons per year (including pressing and forging industries). SMZ is the only supplier in Russia and the CIS countries of tapes for the production of aluminum cans for beverages and containers for canned food.

The plant was put into operation in 1960. In 1998, the company was acquired by Oleg Deripaska's Siberian Aluminum Company. In 2005, the plant became part of the international Alcoa company. After the separation of Alcoa in 2016, Arconic SMZ is part of Arconic Corporation. In November 2022, Arconic Corporation sold the Russian business for $230 million to Shelkov's Industrial Investments. Shelkov is also the main beneficiary (65%) of Russian titanium producer VSMPO-Avisma.

In addition to rolled sheets, SMZ produces aluminum bars, profiles, panels and other semi-finished products, as well as aluminum pipes of various sizes. In addition, the company produces aluminum and titanium alloy stampings. In September 2016, SMZ and VSMPO-Avisma established a joint venture to manufacture large-size aluminum and titanium stampings for the aircraft industry.

The consumers of SMZ products are enterprises of the aviation, space, packaging, shipbuilding, automotive, construction, oil and gas production, transport engineering and other industries. The company employs about 3,000 people.
