Saudi Arabia kicks off one of the largest sustainable hydrogen projects in the world

Air Products has placed an order with Germany's thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers to supply more than two gigawatts (2 GW) of electrolysis system for one of the world's largest green hydrogen projects at NEOM in Saudi Arabia.

As part of this contract, thyssenkrupp will design and manufacture a system based on a 20 megawatt (MW) module for the electrolysis of alkaline water.

“The development and implementation of this innovative mega-project is one of many steps required for a successful transition to energy ... This project is the first step towards becoming a pioneer in the green hydrogen economy,” commented Dr. Samir J. Serhan , Chief Operating Officer of Air Products.

After commissioning, the system will be operated by the project partners - NEOM, ACWA Power and Air Products ("NEOM Green Hydrogen Company").

The hydrogen produced is synthesized into climate neutral ammonia, which Air Products exports exclusively to the global market. Planning and procurement work has already begun, commissioning is scheduled for 2026.
