Water plays a central role in many stages of steel production, tk Steel notes. This is necessary for cooling and targeted temperature control throughout the rolling process, as well as for cleaning, for example, when it is necessary to remove layers of scale from the slab surface.

Of the 200 million cubic meters of water per year at the Bikerwerth plant, 97% of the products are needed for continuous reuse. The upgraded water supply system has further improved resource efficiency, the company notes.

The modernization was carried out by PSE Engineering GmbH. This included the construction of gravel filters, pumps, and cooling towers, including a complete set of piping for the installation and a new electrical switchgear. The design of the structure was carried out by Fenne from Gladbeck. With a construction period of three years, investments in the project amounted to approximately double-digit figure of one million euros.
