During the shutdown, four water-cooled panels of the precipitation chamber were replaced at Severstal.

The panels are designed for cooling exhaust gases and trapping steelmaking dust, which prevents premature wear of the flues and ensures the environmental friendliness and safety of the unit. The equipment is part of a modern exhaust gas purification system together with a bag filter, a needle-type cooler and a water-cooled flue.
Also, during the shutdown of the arc steelmaking furnace (DSP-1), a number of standard operations were carried out: replacement of the flue, modernization of the slag corridor and repair of energy and electrical equipment.
The overhaul of DSP-1 is aimed at maintaining high technical readiness of the equipment, compliance with environmental standards and improving working conditions, said Evgeny Vinogradov, General Director of the Severstal Russian Steel and Resource Assets division.
"The gas-cleaning aspiration equipment of the unit complies with all the requirements and norms of environmental legislation. Let me remind you that the arc steelmaking furnace is a unique unit for our plant and industry. Together with the increased capacity of 1.3 million tons per year, the furnace is a "flexible" unit capable of operating both without liquid cast iron and with its increased consumption (85% cast iron, 15% scrap). Due to this, we reduce the cost of steel production and increase our energy efficiency."Specialists from contractors and employees of their own departments are involved in the repair work. For the first time, the centralized section of the Directorate for Metallurgical Production (a division within CherMK) produced a new gas outlet – this is one of the parts of the water-cooled furnace vault. According to experts, the upgraded gas outlet will last longer than the previous equipment.
DSP-1 was put into operation in April 2021. The furnace combines the capabilities of a shaft furnace and a small converter, which makes it a unique unit for the domestic metallurgy industry. The flexible technology of the DSP-1 makes it possible to significantly reduce the consumption of electricity and graphitized electrodes.
