Workers of the mining and metallurgical complex of Ukraine earn more than one and a half times more than the national average, the Federation of Metallurgists of Ukraine reported on Tuesday, adding that if we compare their salaries with the minimum wage in Ukraine, the difference will be 3.5 times.
In October, the average monthly salary of metallurgists amounted to UAH 21,503 (about USD 800), while at mining enterprises this figure is even higher - UAH 22,182. At the same time, the average salary in the Ukrainian economy, according to the State Statistics Service, was UAH 14,045.
The highest salaries are for forge and steel workers, as well as for electric locomotive and sinter operators, whose rates exceed UAH 40,000 per month.
“At the enterprises of the mining and metallurgical complex, a significant number of workers work in difficult or harmful conditions, and indeed this is one of the reasons why they should receive large salaries. But this is not the only factor. Firstly, our enterprises demonstrate high social responsibility, therefore, employees are often rewarded with bonuses, bonuses, 13 or even 14 salaries. Secondly, the personnel departments form a kind of career and personal development strategies for employees. Thus, a person sees a clear and understandable growth trajectory in the enterprise and understands what he needs to do to get more income. This motivates employees to improve their qualifications, acquire new professions and improve their skills, ”explained Sergey Belenkiy, chairman of the Federation of Metallurgists of Ukraine.
