European Commission: Ukraine should continue investing in renewable energy

the Steps of Ukraine for the decarbonization of the economy, the progress in the implementation of EU legislation and the role and tasks of the "Green Deal" - all these issues were discussed by the Ministry of energy, the Saee, the Ambassadors of Austria and Italy in Ukraine, representatives of the EU delegation to Ukraine, IRENA, the European Commission, "E-Control" (Austria), "EURAC Research" (Italy) joint online conference.

Deputy Minister of energy of Ukraine on European integration Yaroslav Demchenkov, in a speech noted that the EU and around the world more and more convinced that renewable energy, energy conservation and energy efficiency are key factors for sustainable development of countries and continents.

"the European green deal is an important point in the context of European integration of Ukraine, and Ukraine shares the goals of this agreement. However, keeping the course for the development of clean, renewable energy sources and reducing emissions of greenhouse gases in the country, we are forced to adhere to a balanced policy, taking into account the real economic and financial capacities of the country", - said Y. Demchenkov.

"We also pay attention to the development of bioenergy as a means of natural gas substitution, reducing dependence on imports and strengthening the economy of the state. Given the agricultural status of the country, the potential for development of bioenergy powerful," said J. Demchenkov.

In turn, Deputy head of Saee Yuriy Shafarenko said that the path to the decarbonization of Ukraine consistently implements the regulations and directives of the EU into national legislation.

"In the framework of the EU project Twinning, we worked side by side with the Austrian and Italian colleagues over the implementation of the 28th EU Directive. Special attention was given to bioenergy, incentives for the production of bioethanol, the introduction of energy storage systems, hydrogen technologies, which are actively developing in the EU. The acquired experience will help Ukraine to reduce energy dependence and develop sustainable economy. We would like to thank the EU and hope for further support of Ukraine", - commented Yuriy Shafarenko.

Hans van Steen, acting Chairman of the General Directorate energy of the European Commission, said:

"In 2019, the EU has set ambitious objectives for renewable energy until 2030. Along with energy efficiency and renewable energy sources is a key element for achieving the EU's goals of becoming climate neutral by 2050. In accordance with the Association Agreement Ukraine is closely linked with these processes and has the full support of the EU for further progress in this direction."

Willingness to continue cooperation with Ukraine in the issues of decarbonization, renewable energy sources also expressed by the Ambassadors of Austria and Italy in Ukraine, representatives of the EU delegation to Ukraine, Agencies of Austria on energy and the environment.

the Event was held to mark the completion of the EU Twinning project "Development of renewable energy sources in Ukraine", implemented in cooperation with the Saee.

Earlier today the Ministry of energy of Ukraine declared competitive selection of investment projects for implementation of which state support is provided. Investment projects should meet the following criteria:

  • economic efficiency of the project;
  • the
  • implementation of energy efficient and resource saving technologies;
  • the
  • the impact of project implementation on the development of domestic production and increase of competitiveness of the national producer;

  • protection of the environment;

  • innovation, etc..
