The work carried out as part of the overhaul will ensure high productivity, reliability and environmental friendliness of the equipment, and restore the design parameters, according to Severstal.

Despite the current difficult situation in the industry, we are continuing a long-term program of technical re-equipment of the first CherMK conversion, said Alexander Shevelev, CEO of Severstal.

"A set of measures worth 22 billion rubles will make it possible to produce pig iron at blast furnace No. 4 with an increased proportion of iron ore pellets and reduced solid fuel consumption, which is important from the point of view of efficiency and environmental impact. It is planned to equip the furnace with highly efficient suction pumps from cast-iron flaps, shelters for cast-iron and slag troughs, and places where cast iron is drained. The aspiration valves will be controlled automatically. The mode of their operation is supposed to be synchronized with the modes of pig iron production at the foundry. This will improve the condition of workplaces and reduce unorganized emissions from the foundry into the atmosphere by effectively trapping dust generated during the delivery of smelting products. It is important to emphasize that we have developed a set of measures that will allow us to avoid reducing the volume of finished products, despite the shutdown of the unit. The formed stock of steel slabs will help to minimize production losses during the DP-4 shutdown. Thus, the schedule for the execution of customer orders will be saved."

The main operations within the framework of the overhaul are the replacement of the cone–free loading device, the cooling system of the furnace and refractory masonry, the repair of the air heater block, the foundry yard, the charge feed and the aspiration system. Severstal's own divisions are involved in the organization and management of the complex of construction and installation works.

The general contractor of the works is the Domnaremont Center (part of Severstal). The general designer was Severstal-Project. The SSM-Tyazhmash machine–building center (part of the Seversal company) participates in the repair of complex large-sized equipment - air heaters and charge feed elements.

Specialists from 30 Vologda Region companies with a total staff of 1,800 people are involved in the manufacture of equipment and work. It is planned to start the unit after the shutdown
