The largest hydro-generating company in Ukraine, Ukrhydroenergo, published a probable scenario of possible destruction of the dam of the Kyiv hydroelectric complex, which is possible as a result of a missile strike by Russian troops, in which it called any catastrophic consequences for the population impossible.
The hydro-generating company noted that from the point of view of reliability, the hydraulic structures of the Kyiv HPP, as well as other stations of Ukrhydroenergo, do not raise any doubts, which is confirmed by the relevant conclusions of the Interdepartmental Commission, which inspects them every five years.
“Regarding the possible scenarios of rocket attacks by Russian troops on the dam of the Kyiv hydroelectric complex, no critical threat to the population is predicted. Since the station itself and the dam were designed and built in the 60s. taking into account the threats, with a significant margin of safety and stability, it is not so easy to destroy or significantly damage massive hydraulic structures by hitting a missile. In case of damage to the metal gates of the dam, a gradual uncontrolled leakage of water from the Kyiv reservoir may occur, resulting in a short-term flooding of some areas in the downstream of the hydroelectric complex. The flood zones will be insignificant and known to the services of the State Emergency Service and local authorities, so local residents will be notified ahead of time.
Ukrhydroenergo considers the dissemination of unfounded assessments of the catastrophic consequences of a possible breakthrough of the Kyiv hydroelectric dam as a dubious, inappropriate, and sometimes harmful activity aimed at whipping up panic, distracting society from urgent problems.
