Ukrainian steelmits expect a serious shortage of scrap metal in 2025

Ukraine / Ferrous metallurgy

Since August 2024, the remains of scrap metal at metallurgical plants of metinvest do not exceed the volume required by 3-4 days of work. This year, the situation will become even more complicated.

Ukrainian steelmits expect a serious shortage of scrap metal in 2025

Metinvest-resource company, which ensures the supply of ferrous metal scrap to the enterprises of the Metinvest group, expects a significant shortage of scrap metal in 2025, said the director of the company Ivan Kovalevsky during the UAVTORMET meeting.

in particular, in This year, Metinvest predicts the growth of domestic scrap consumption in Ukraine to 1.73 million tons and plans to bring its own use of scrap to 580 thousand tons. In particular, scrap metal on certain processes is now not formed, so the volume that we had previously had at the expense of our own resources should now be replaced and buying from the market, ”Kovalevsky explained.

he noted, That this year the company has encountered significant difficulties in providing the needs of metallurgical production in scrap metal, and the group plants were forced to work with wheels and sometimes, due to the lack of raw materials, passed from the production of more marginal steel products to the production of commodity cast iron.

“We worked very hard this year. Since August, the remains on our plants do not exceed the volume required by 3-4 days of work. We work almost from the wheels. The shortage last year was more than 25-30 thousand tons. We blocked it due to internal reserves, gritted off all our landfills, cut off the oversized scraps, also stopped enrichment factories, fixed assets in the guests. But in 2025 we no longer see such opportunities, since our reserves are infinite, ”Kovalevsky explained.

In addition, he drew attention to the problem of lack of personnel in scrap metal due to war and mobilization, as well as such problems as an increase in the cost of production, an increase in logistics costs, etc.

Recall, the UAVTORMMMEM predicts that in 2025, the workpiece of scrap metal by Ukrainian companies will be 1.45-1.65 million tons.
