Batteries will provide an additional reserve for maintaining the frequency and expand the regulating range of the automatic reserve for frequency recovery, necessary to ensure the reliable and stable functioning of the unified energy system of Ukraine.

World Bank will give Ukraine $ 211 million for giant batteries for hydroelectric power plants

The delegations of Ukraine and the World Bank held negotiations to attract $ 211 million in concessional loans to implement a project to improve the sustainability of the Ukrainian energy system for integration into the European energy grid.

As a result of the negotiations, the head of the Ukrainian delegation - First Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Yuriy Vlasenko signed a protocol of negotiations.

The project provides for the installation of energy storage systems with a capacity of 197 MW at four hydroelectric power plants (Kievskaya, Kanevskaya, Kremenchugskaya and Sredneprovskaya) of CJSC Ukrhydroenergo, as well as the construction of a solar power plant with a capacity of 35.9 MW, as a backup source of energy supply and for charging batteries.

It is planned to install 15 MW batteries at the Dnestrovskaya HPP as a source for charging local electric transport, as well as mount a 28 MW solar power plant as a backup source of power supply and for charging batteries.

Installation of hybrid power generation units based on battery storage will allow Ukrhydroenergo to provide the transmission system operator, NEC Ukrenergo, an additional frequency maintenance reserve and expand the regulatory range of the automatic frequency recovery reserve required to ensure reliable and stable operation of the UPS of Ukraine , compliance with the operational safety of the power system and the quality of electrical energy.

“The implementation of the project will contribute to improving the reliability of the Ukrainian energy system, meeting the requirements for functioning in synchronization with European networks and international obligations in the field of reducing greenhouse gas emissions are identified by the priority areas of work of the Ministry of Energy,” Yuriy Vlasenko noted.

Let us remind you that on June 2, the Cabinet of Ministers made a decision on the advisability of attracting external financing for the implementation of this investment project. The World Bank Board of Directors will review the package of guarantee and financial transactions by the end of June.
