Germany's second largest steelmaker, Salzgitter AG, has announced that it has successfully produced the first green 2 low-CO green steel slabs at its Peine plant.
“Until the end of 2020, the group will offer its customers green flat products in a differentiated range of sizes and grades. The CO 2 emissions of these products are 75% less than in conventional production, ”the Salzgitter press service said.
The production of green steel became possible after the restructuring of the continuous casting plant so that it could run on hydrogen. These environmentally friendly steel products can be used for all common applications such as automotive, construction and industrial applications.
Prof. Dr. Ing. Heinz Jörg Fuhrmann, CEO of Salzgitter AG, said:
“For a large number of our customers, it is now important to get a physically real product, not just a more or less theoretical balance sheet for CO 2 products. We are also working intensively with partners to transform steelmaking into a low carbon, hydrogen-based process through our SALCOS project innovations, which will reduce CO 2 emissions by up to 95%. ”
