10 out of 15 steel-smelting electric furnaces continue to stand idle in Ukraine

At the beginning of the year, 17 out of 21 blast furnaces, 7 out of 8 open-hearth furnaces, 12 out of 16 converters, 5 out of 15 electric furnaces and 16 out of 17 continuous casting machines are in operation out of the main operating production capacities of Ukraine.

According to the data of the association of enterprises "Ukrmetallurgprom", as of January 12, 2022, out of the main operating metallurgical capacities, 5 out of 15 electric furnaces were in operation.

17 out of 21 blast furnaces, 7 out of 8 open-hearth furnaces, 12 out of 16 converters, 5 out of 15 electric furnaces and 16 out of 17 continuous casting machines were also involved in steel production.

The association noted an increase in the supply of scrap metal to Ukrainian metallurgical plants in 2021 by 33.7% to 3,916 thousand tons, of which 3,300 thousand tons were supplied to Ukrainian consumers as imported.

Export of scrap metal from Ukraine in January-December 2021 amounted to 616 thousand tons (1,711% compared to the same period in 2020).

It is noted that the consumption of natural gas by the Ukrainian metallurgical industry decreased by 1.6% compared to 2020, against the backdrop of an increase in electricity consumption by 2.8%.
